Breaking away from the traditional vertical striation design seen on most Lenovo laptops, the Y50’s lid features a crisscross pattern. Lenovo worked with JBL on the Y50's speaker design.  the Lenovo Y50 weighs in at 5.29 pounds or 2.39 kg and only measures 0.94 inches thin. Both the laptop lid and underside are fitted with brushed aluminum panels, again adding Lenovo's almost-trademark, cross-hatched pattern. At the same time, the machine's shiny metal bottom will provide some extra passive cooling on top of the laptop's exhaust fans.

For the left side of the laptop features an Ethernet connector, an High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) connector, and two USB 3.0 ports. The Lenovo Y50 features a 15.6” FHD (1920 x 1080) LED (Light-Emitting Diode) backlit display. At roughly 210 nits, the screen is dimmer than most 15.6” screens on the market, and is severely outclassed by competing devices such as the MSI GS60 Ghost Pro; which offers an attractive 3k display at nearly 300 nits brightness plus red backlit keyboard, easily the visual highlight of the system. Many other gaming laptops offer backlit keyboards, usually in a rainbow of user-adjustable colors, but this version is built around that single red color and On the bright side, the Y50’s speakers pump out decent audio with better bass response than the typical treble-heavy laptop speakers deliver. In terms of gaming performance, Lenovo’s Y50 is one of the best laptops in its class.
