Many investors might assume Microsoft's smartwatch is just a knee-jerk reaction to Samsung and Apple's recent announcements.
Microsoft may be aiming to carve out a slice of the growing smartwatch market. A spokesman for Microsoft would not comment on the details. Microsoft’s device will track continuous heart rate over the course of a person’s day, sources say. The touch screen interface of Microsoft Smartwatch consists of live tiles, just like Windows phone. The Microsoft Smartwatch will have a customized Windows OS, so apps that generally work on new Windows Phone will be compatible with Microsoft watch.

Microsoft in 2012 was also rumored to be working on a wearable fitness accessory that tied with the Kinect Play Fit service, codenamed Joule. The population health company, which is 50% owned by Microsoft, currently works with hospitals and doctors to manage patient health data and analyze risks like re-admissions. The bigger picture is that with a continuous heart rate monitor, Microsoft would be moving wearable devices further ahead to “consumerized” healthcare. Founder Ron Gutmann believes doctors of the future “will have to become data scientists” to properly analyze the stats coming in from multiple sources, such as heart rate and sleep data from wearable devices and nutrition data from apps like Runkeeper or MyFitnessPal.
Assuming the information is accurate, Microsoft would be the latest big tech player to jump onto the smartwatch bandwagon. Samsung's Gear Fit attempts to pull off the dual role, while Apple'siWatch will purportedly offer health and fitness benefits by tapping into a mobile app called Healthbook.
Launching a smartwatch is risky, but if Microsoft offers the right features and the right price, it could have a cross-platform hit on its hands.
